Watch Evgeni Malkin slash his own goalie in the face during altercation

Lemony Snicket has nothing on the series of unfortunate events that Matt Murray suffered on Wednesday night.

The first period was a rough one for the Penguins starting goaltender. Not only did Murray give up two goals to the Capitals in the opening frame of the divisional rivalry game — he also was the recipient of some friendly fire.

Late in the first, Murray lost his helmet after making a save and freezing the puck following a Capitals rush. As play came to a halt, Penguins star Evgeni Malkin and Washington's Karl Alzner got tied up in an altercation beside the Pittsburgh net. As the two shoved each other, Malkin's stick came swinging around and accidentally slashed Murray right in the mouth.

Here's another look:

Murray immediately left the game to get repairs in the locker room and remained on the bench in the second period.
