Watch Auston Matthews become first player to score 4 goals in NHL debut

It didn't take long for the Auston Matthews era to arrive for the Maple Leafs. The top overall pick from this summer's draft notched the first goal of the new NHL season on Wednesday night, and it only took him eight minutes to do so.

Matthews picked up the tally on a one-timer in front of a what was essentially a wide open net in the first period of the Leafs' season-opener in Ottawa. It wasn't exactly the most beautiful goal he'll ever score in his life, but it's definitely a memorable one.

To make the moment even a bit more special, Matthews parents were in attendance to witness it. A proud mom and dad shared an awesome embrace following the goal.

Then, shortly after that, Matthews recorded his second career goal. This one was, in fact, a beauty. He managed to carve through a handful of veteran Senators defensemen in the process.

He still wasn't done there. That's right, Matthews managed to net his third goal less than a minute and a half into the second period. He became the fifth player to net a hat trick in his NHL debut, and he did it on just three shots.

Only, he wasn't done there.

With just a few seconds remaining in the second period, Matthews became the first player ever to score four goals in his first NHL contest. Unbelievable.

You may need to check my math, but it seems the 19-year-old is on pace for about a billion career goals.
