Veteran Gomez signs tryout contract with Capitals' AHL affiliate

Veteran forward Scott Gomez on Thursday signed a professional tryout contract with Hershey, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Washington Capitals.

The Bears announced the signing of the 36-year-old Gomez, who was placed on unconditional waivers by the St. Louis Blues on Dec. 30. The Alaska native will be making his first venture to the AHL, although Capitals coach Barry Trotz told reporters that Gomez could be helpful on a number of levels.

"There's a lot of good things that Scott can bring, and that's a good add by Hershey. Not too many times Scott Gomez will come around and add him to your roster in the American Hockey League. Good on them to do that, and that'll help the kids and help the team and give them some more depth at that center-ice position."

A two-time Stanley Cup champion with the New Jersey Devils, Gomez scored one goal and set up seven others in 21 games for the Blues this season.

The 27th overall selection of the 1998 draft, Gomez has collected 181 goals and 574 assists in 1,066 career contests with the Devils, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, San Jose Sharks, Florida Panthers and Blues.
