Vancouver Canucks Recall F Mike Zalewski from Utica Comets

The Vancouver Canucks have recalled forward Mike Zalewski from the Utica Comets of the AHL.

The Vancouver Canucks have made a call to the Utica Comets to bring up forward Mike Zalewski ahead of Friday’s match-up with the Edmonton Oilers.

The 24-year-old forward has played five games with the Comets this year and has one assist with eight penalty minutes.

The Canucks had to make a corresponding roster move to make room for Zalewski on the 23-man roster and Chris Tanev will be heading to the injured reserve.

There was some thought that Tanev might be available for this weekend’s games but he was in a walking boot yesterday at Rogers Arena.

If Tanev is out for seven days, that obviously means Troy Stecher will be sticking around for a little while longer which is only good news for Canucks fans looking for any sense of excitement at this point in the season.

As for Zalewski, it’s not likely that he will draw in to the lineup on Friday if the team is healthy, according to head coach Willie Desjardins.

Zalewski coming up only to sit in the press box doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense. However, the Canucks are currently left with only Alex Biega and Nikita Tryamkin as extra skaters, both of whom are defensemen. If a forward suffers an injury, they will need to get back to Zalewski.

For now, it will look like Zalewski will merely be around as a buddy for Biega and Tryamkin, watching games from up high.
