Stars buy out D Rome with one year left on deal

Thirty-year-old defenseman Aaron Rome has been bought out by the Dallas Stars, team general manager Jim Nill announced Tuesday according to an official press release on the Stars’ website.

Rome signed a three-year deal worth $4.5 million with Dallas in 2012. He played 42 regular season games and one playoff game for the Stars, recording six assists.

Under the NHL collective bargaining agreement, teams were given two amnesty buyouts that must be used by the end of the month. With Tuesday's move, the Stars will pay Rome two-thirds of the $1.6 million he was set to earn next season. That money won't count against the salary cap.

Previously, Rome played for Anaheim, Columbus, and Vancouver over his first six NHL seasons.
