Scary close-up shows just how devastating this playoff hockey hit is

Here's a cold-blooded playoff hockey hit, up close and personal.

That was Tampa Bay's Ryan Callahan laying out Pittsburgh's Kris Letang in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Letang, who has dealt with concussions during his career, laid motionless for several seconds but skated off under his own power. He missed about 10 minutes of game time before returning. Callahan earned a 5-minute major penalty but did not receive a game misconduct.

"I'm trying to pin him," Callahan said. "Unfortunately, in that split second I can't make a decision. The position he was in made it worse than it was. That's not the way I play."

The Lightning went on to win 3-1, but lost goalie Ben Bishop to a leg injury.
