Report: Isles open contract talks with Okposo

The New York Islanders and Kyle Okposo have begun talks on the right wing signing a multi-year contract extension prior to the upcoming season, according to a report by The Fourth Period.

Okposo is in the final campaign of his five-year, $14 million contract, during which he is owed $4.5 million. The 27-year-old Minnesota native has established a connection with fellow linemate and captain John Tavares during his career, but the Islanders also have Frans Nielsen and restricted free agent Ryan Strome to consider for new deals.

The seventh overall pick of the 2006 draft, Okposo scored 18 goals and set up 33 others in 60 games last season. The power forward missed 22 contests due to emergency surgery to repair a detached retina in his eye.

Okposo collected career highs in goals (27), assists (42), points (69) in 2013-14 and has recorded 305 points (117 goals, 188 assists) in 450 career contests.
