Red Wings sign Abdelkader to seven-year deal

The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Justin Abdelkader to a seven-year, $29.75 million contract extension.

The 29-year-old has four goals and three assists in 15 games this season.

Abdelkader was selected by Detroit in the second round of the 2005 draft. He has 65 goals and 74 assists in 413 career games.

Abdlkader's most productive season came just last year. His 23 goals and 21 assists were both career markers, and made him the fifth-highest scorer on the Red Wings. 

The new deal currently makes Abdelkader the third-highest paid forward on the Red Wings payroll next season.

Darren Helm, Drew Miller and Joakim Andersson remain as the lone upcoming unrestricted free agents for Detroit next season. The Red Wings also have five upcoming restricted free agents next season in Petr Mrazek, Riley Sheahan, Teemu Pulkkinen, Danny DeKeyser and Alexey Marchenko.
