Penguins bolster depth, ink Fehr to three-year deal

The Pittsburgh Penguins increased their depth by signing center Eric Fehr to a three-year, $6 million contract on Tuesday.

The move came on the heels of the team acquiring center Nick Bonino, defenseman Adam Clendening and a second-round selection in the 2016 draft from the Vancouver Canucks for center Brandon Sutter and a third-round pick.

"Fehr is comfortable as a two-position player," Pittsburgh general manager Jim Rutherford said on a conference call Tuesday. "He could definitely jump up to the top-6 if the situation presented itself."

Fehr underwent elbow surgery in June and is expected to miss four-to-six months. The 29-year-old collected 19 goals, 14 assists and a plus-8 rating with the Washington Capitals last season.

The 18th overall pick of the 2003 draft, Fehr has recorded 89 goals, 88 assists and a plus-49 rating in 454 career regular-season games with the Winnipeg Jets and Washington.
