Panthers ink veteran Havlat to tryout contract

The Florida Panthers signed veteran forward Martin Havlat to a professional tryout contract on Friday.

Havlat recorded five goals and nine assists in 40 games with the New Jersey Devils last season. The 34-year-old unrestricted free agent had been rumored to be in talks with the Ottawa Senators, with whom he spent five seasons after being selected with the 26th overall pick of the 1999 NHL draft.

Instead, Havlat will report to the Panthers' training camp, which begins on Thursday.

A six-time 20-goal scorer, Havlat has collected 241 tallies and 352 assists in 788 career contests with the Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild, San Jose Sharks, Senators and Devils.
