NHL's most laughable club loses on one of season's most laughable goals

As the Oilers continue to miss the playoffs (nine straight seasons, longest active streak in the NHL) despite stockpiling talent (four No. 1 overall picks in six seasons), people continue to wonder just how does Edmonton manage to be so bad, year-in and year-out?

Here’s an answer.

With his team actually tied on the road against the defending Eastern Conference champions -- and on a power play -- Edmonton goalie Anders Nilsson decided to play a clearing pass sent down from the other end of the ice and turned what should have been a line change into a game-winning gift for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

See for yourself:

The short-hander by Brian Boyle -- just his ninth goal of the season -- gave Tampa Bay a 5-4 lead, and Alex Killorn’s empty netter with 27 seconds to play sealed the Lightning’s 6-4 win, and another baffling defeat for the Oilers.
