NHL approves change for breaking ties in standings

The NHL has approved a change in its bylaw that governs how the league breaks ties in the standings at the end of the season.

Under the revised bylaw approved by the NHL Board of Governors on Tuesday, shootout wins will not be included in the tiebreaker for two teams which finish with the same amount of points. That tiebreaker is limited to regulation and overtime victories.

The league's general managers proposed the change after their March meeting. The NHL Players' Association representatives on the competition committee endorsed the change Saturday.
