Maple Leafs lose James van Riemsdyk for significant time with broken foot

The Toronto Maple Leafs lost more than just their pride in a 7-0 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. The team also lost leading scorer James van Riemsdyk, who suffered a non-displaced fracture in his left foot during the game and will miss at least 6-8 weeks with the injury.

Van Riemsdyk played just under 16 minutes in the game but still managed to be on the ice for three goals against in the loss.

This will be the first extended absence for van Riemsdyk since joining the Maple Leafs back in 2012, as he has missed just two games over the last four seasons with Toronto. The 26-year-old has 29 points through 40 games this season off 14 goals and 15 assists.

The Maple Leafs announced Monday that they have recalled forward Josh Leivo from the AHL to round out the roster now that van Riemsdyk is out. Leivo has 30 points (11 goals, 19 assists) in 35 games for the Toronto Marlies so far this season.
