MacTavish to coach Chicago Wolves of AHL

Former NHL player and coach Craig MacTavish has been hired to coach the Chicago Wolves, the Vancouver Canucks' AHL affiliate.

The Canucks announced the hiring Monday.

MacTavish coached the Edmonton Oilers for eight seasons before being fired at the end of 2008-09. The 52-year-old Ontario native spent the last two seasons as a television analyst for TSN.

MacTavish played 1,093 career NHL games between 1980 and 1997, winning three Stanley Cups with the Oilers and another with the New York Rangers.

He spent two years as an assistant coach with the Rangers before moving back to Edmonton, where he compiled a 301-252-47-56 regular-season record, guiding the Oilers to the 2006 Stanley Cup final.
