Gainey rejoining Stars as senior advisor

Bob Gainey is returning to the Dallas Stars as a senior advisor to the team.

Gainey was the general manager of the Stars when they won their only Stanley Cup in 1999, then went back to the finals a year later. He was the coach from 1990-96 and GM from 1992-2000, leading Dallas to seven consecutive playoff berths and five division titles.

The Stars, who have missed the playoffs four seasons in a row, announced Gainey's return on Thursday.

Gainey most recently worked for Montreal Canadiens. He was general manager from 2003-2010, served as interim head coach twice and was a special advisor.

Gainey, part of five Stanley Cups as a player, was a 1992 inductee into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
