Flyers waive veteran forwards Porter, McDonald

Chris Porter didn't land a roster spot with the Philadelphia Flyers despite sharing a collegiate connection with coach Dave Hakstol.

Porter joined fellow 31-year-old forward Colin McDonald as being waived by the club on Wednesday. Both veterans are expected to clear waivers and be sent to Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League, according to Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Porter, who spent four years at the University of North Dakota under Hakstol, collected one goal and one assist in 24 games last season with the St. Louis Blues. The 6-foot-1, 206-pound Toronto native has recorded 11 tallies and 16 assists in parts of six campaigns with the Blues.

Hardly the ideal birthday present on Wednesday, McDonald scored two goals and set up six others in 18 games with the New York Islanders in 2014-15. The 6-foot-2, 214-pounder recorded 18 goals and 26 assists in 140 career contests with the Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Islanders.
