Flyers' Read learns from healthy scratch, returns to lineup vs. Canadiens

Philadelphia Flyers forward Matt Read didn't like being a spectator for the first time this season.

After serving as a healthy scratch in the team's 2-1 setback to the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, Read is ready to return to face the visiting Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday. Although the move was made to have seven defenseman available to face the Kings, Read took the benching to heart.

"It is a learning experience and a lot of guys go through this in their career and you have to move forward and get better every day."

Read has recorded five goals, seven assists and a minus-5 rating in 36 contests this season. The 29-year-old Ontario native has failed to score a goal since the Flyers' 4-2 win over the St. Louis Blues on Dec. 10.

Philadelphia coach Dave Hakstol is trying to ignite a dormant offense that is averaging just 2.11 goals per contest. That total is good enough to be ranked 29th in the league, ahead of only the Anaheim Ducks (1.89).

The Flyers (15-15-7), who reside in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division, mustered just five tallies en route to getting swept during a three-game road trip through California.
