Flyers' Gostisbehere: 'It's pretty cool to be a part of history'

Philadelphia Flyers rookie defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere is well aware of history, despite being all of just 22 years of age.

So, when Gostisbehere extended his NHL-record point streak among rookie defensemen to 12 games on Sunday, the Floridian was quick to credit his teammates for his accomplishment. Unfortunately for Gostisbehere, his assist came in the waning moments of the 3-1 setback to the New York Rangers - marking the Flyers' fifth loss in six outings.

"It's awesome. It's history. And it's pretty cool to be part of history. Especially, so early in my career. I can't thank my teammates enough. Without them, I could not do any of that."

Gostisbehere, who has scored three goals and set up 12 others during his scintillating stretch, established a franchise record for a point streak by a rookie on Saturday afternoon. His NHL high-tying sixth power-play tally among rookies, however, was all that the Flyers could muster in a 2-1 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils.

A third-round pick of the 2012 draft, Gostisbehere has collected 10 goals and 21 assists in just 37 games this season. The 31-point total in a significantly fewer number of games trails only Chicago Blackhawks forward Artemi Panarin (52 in 57 games), Detroit Red Wings All-Star Dylan Larkin (38 in 55 contests), Buffalo Sabres star Jack Eichel (38 in 57 games), Arizona Coyotes forward Max Domi (35 in 55 contests) among rookies this season.

Taken a step further, Gostisbehere leads all rookie defensemen in points - with St. Louis Blues blue-liner Colton Parayko (22 in 55 games) the closest on the list.

The Flyers (24-21-10), who never have seen a player win the Calder Trophy in the franchise history, will try to get back on track when they visit New Jersey (29-21-7) on Tuesday.
