Devils to honor Brodeur by retiring number, building statue

The New Jersey Devils will honor Martin Brodeur by retiring his No. 30 jersey inside the Prudential Center and erecting a statue outside of it.

The Devils announced the plans on Tuesday, with the ceremony for the four-time Vezina Trophy winner being scheduled prior to the team's game against the visiting Edmonton Oilers on Feb. 9.

"I don't think you can honor a hockey player better than retiring his number and (building) a statue now," Brodeur told reporters. The 43-year-old will become the fourth Devil to have his number retired, joining defensemen Scott Stevens, Ken Daneyko and Scott Niedermayer for the honor.

A three-time Stanley Cup champion, Brodeur recorded 688 of his NHL-best 691 career wins in New Jersey while playing 21 of his 22 career seasons with the Devils. The 10-time All-Star finished with NHL goaltending records in shutouts (125), games played (1,266) and minutes played (74,439).

Brodeur, who finished his career with St. Louis, now serves as assistant general manager with the Blues.
