Devils' Shero on naming captain: 'I'm not sure we'll have one'
New Jersey Devils general manager Ray Shero isn't going out of his way to name a team captain.
"There is no rush for this. I'm not sure we'll have one," Shero told NJ.com on Wednesday. "Maybe we will. I don't want to paint myself into a corner by saying we'll have one and we don't, or we won't have one and we do."
Defenseman Bryce Salvador has been the team's captain for the past three seasons, but the 39-year-old played in just 15 games in 2014-15. An unrestricted free agent, Salvador is recovering from a bulging disc and nerve damage in his back and reportedly is mulling his options on his career.
Fellow blue-liner Andy Greene and forward Adam Henrique served as alternate captains last season for the Devils, who have missed the playoffs for three straight years.
