Devils name Fitzgerald as assistant GM

The New Jersey Devils named Tom Fitzgerald as their assistant general manager on Friday.

The news came on the heels of Thursday's announcement that long-time president Lou Lamoriello resigned to become the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"Tom Fitzgerald has extensive experience as both a player and now in hockey operations, having served in several significant roles over the past eight seasons," New Jersey general manager Ray Shero said. "He is well-respected throughout the league, and I feel that he is an ideal fit for our team."

Fitzgerald joined Shero's staff in Pittsburgh in 2007-08 as the director of player development before being promoted to assistant coach during the Penguins' Stanley Cup-winning season in 2008-09. The 46-year-old served at that post for five years before being elevated to the assistant general manager's role in 2014.

Lamoriello became New Jersey's president and general manager in 1987 and served in both capacities until he was relieved of his latter role in May by Shero. Under Lamoriello, the Devils won the Stanley Cup three times and reached the playoffs on 21 occasions - including 13 straight seasons from 1997-2010.
