Devils' Gionta fined by league following spearing incident

New Jersey Devils forward Stephen Gionta was fined $2,284.95 for his spear to the groin of Ottawa Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki during Thursday's game.

The amount of the fine is one half of Gionta's average daily salary, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Gionta speared Borowiecki in response to a crosscheck late in the second period of New Jersey's 5-4 victory over Ottawa. The 32-year-old Gionta received a five-minute major and a game misconduct for spearing.

Gionta recorded just 12 penalty minutes in 61 games last season.
