Dallas Stars Reduce Training Camp Roster

The regular season is just around the corner, which means the Dallas Stars must start trimming down their training camp roster.

Just 11 days separate the Dallas Stars from their 2016-17 regular season opener against the Anaheim Ducks.

It’s crazy to think that it has almost been five months since the Stars left the ice for the final time of their 2015-16 campaign. After a promising season that ended in them being crowned Central Division champions, the Stars rolled to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs before being knocked out by the St. Louis Blues.

The long offseason ensued, but it’s just about over (rejoice accordingly).

But there is still some preseason business to be dealt with. The first thing that comes to mind is the seven preseason games on the Dallas Stars schedule. The Stars are currently 1-2 in the preseason and play their fourth game today in London, Ontario against the Florida Panthers.

Each game has seen a variety of different players in the starting lineup for Dallas. These players are coming directly from the Stars 2016 training camp session in Cedar Park last weekend. The Stars started with 49 players on their training camp roster, but that can’t last.

By October 13th, Dallas will need to have their roster trimmed down to 23 players to use for the regular season slate.

That’s not an easy task, especially as the roster gets down to 25-30 players. There are a lot of prospects trying to stand out and be one of the lucky few to make it on the active roster in time for the regular season.

Not to mention that multiple players including Tyler Seguin, Cody Eakin, and Mattias Janmark have been plagued with injuries over the past few weeks. This leaves plenty of spaces open for prospects and rookies to hop in and make an impression.

But for now, the Dallas Stars must make some adjustments. They have already started the trimming process.

With 49 on the training camp roster and three on the World Cup of Hockey rosters, the Stars have a total of 52 players to decide between. Janmark is on the IR for around six months after knee surgery, meaning he does not have to be on the active roster.

There have only been three players cut from the roster, leaving Dallas at 49 players. Sam Laberge and Connor Chatham were cut from their amateur tryout contacts, making them free agents. They also assigned 2015 fourth draft pick Chris Martenet to the London Knights of the OHL. Martenet played with the Knights last year and helped win the Memorial Cup.

And now we wait for more cuts. Considering that the Dallas Stars are playing a primarily young lineup today against Florida, there will more than likely be a hefty number of cuts over the next day or two. They are giving a lot of the prospects and tryout players one final chance to impress.

Who else is going to be cut? We’re just going to have to wait and see.
