Dallas Stars Must Now Transition Out of Pre-Season, Into Real Season

Now that pre-season is over and the regular season is quickly nearing, let’s examine some of the most important observations from these pre-season match ups.

Thank the good Lord for preseasons, am I right? They let us jump back into hockey sooner, thus probably saving a lot of us from perishing in the hockey-drought known as off-season.

These pre-season contests also help familiarize us with players we may not know as well as we ought to. And above all, the pre-season gives us a glimpse of how our beloved team could function as the season progresses.

The Dallas Stars’ pre-season run has now come to a close, but not before providing us will all of the aforementioned benefits. We got to see a lot of new names in action and were able to witness just how well our team was able to hold it together without a lot of its “glue” players. Here are just a few of the most important things to come out of this preseason.

First, it demonstrated that the Dallas Stars’ depth was not a last-season fluke or a passing trend. The Stars not only work to bring good players in from elsewhere, but cultivate excellence through their farm system.

A few players that are a part of the Stars family in these ways, but have never made a permanent NHL debut, got to spread their wings and fly this preseason. Draft picks came in clutch, training camp invitees stole the show, and last season’s rookies proved to be ready to take their sophomore season by storm, hold the slump.

Second, it gave us a glimpse of what the beginning of the Dallas Stars’ regular season might look like. With so many go-to guys out with injuries, the young guns will have to take up the slack.

Good news is, they have proven that they are up to that task. The question here, though, is simple. Because preseason effort isn’t always a good predictor of regular season results for any team, will these players be able to stand up under the pressure past the pre-season? I suppose only time will tell.

So here’s a quick recap of the pre-season. The Stars opened it up at home with a 3-1 win over playoff rival St. Louis, but fell 4-2 to the Avalanche on the road two nights later. Another defeat was awaiting them in St. Louis, where the Blues bit back for a 4-1 decision.

The Stars then turned around and bested the Panthers twice, with 2-1 scores, one of which went into overtime, and the other into a shootout. Then last night’s 1-0 loss to Colorado sealed the pre-season forever.

The win-loss ratio is pretty even, but here’s what to notice: the new up and coming Stars seem to be fast learners. While they struggled early on with keeping leads and maintaining play quality in the third period, they transitioned into motivating themselves to fight hard in the third. Although these learning curves did not always end in success, it will get there.

After all, this was just the pre-season. Holding down the fort as well as they did calls for some celebration for the Stars as we anticipate what is shaping up to be another explosive season.
