Dallas Stars Drop Last Contest At The Joe, Fall 3-1 To Red Wings

Despite a strong effort, the Dallas Stars lulled and fell to Detroit to lose their last tilt in the Joe Louis Arena, 3-1.

Game Recap

The Dallas Stars had a promising start when Esa Lindell scored in the first 16 seconds of the opening shift. Despite strong play and dominating the rest of the period, the Stars gave up a power play goal to Dylan Larkin with only about 40 second left in the first period.

Going into the second tied, the Stars still put forth a tremendous offensive effort and did well resetting their offense after clearing the puck from their own zone. However, the Red Wings were to be the only scorers in the second, with another power play goal coming from Anthony Mantha about eight minutes in.

The Stars simply couldn’t pull out another goal, and the final nail in the coffin was former Star Steve Ott‘s empty net goal with two minutes to go, sealing the deal at 3-1.

Thoughts and Observations

And the defensemen have it

The Stars put up a great offensive fight, outshooting the Red Wings 35 to 20. With Esa Lindell as the only scorer, the Stars also relied on their other defensemen as they pushed forward.

Although Jamie Oleksiak did not score as was his main role in the game prior to this one, he did contribute multiple shots and seems to have stepped into a role as a two-way defenseman. As John Klingberg was scratched this game, it was great to see other defensemen stepping up to fill his scoring shoes, or skates, rather.

Getting power played, 2.0

The Red Wings had a pretty awful power play record coming into tonight’s game, having let 14 previous chances pass them by without converting. However, the Stars gave up two power play goals to Detroit tonight, signalling perhaps that the Stars’ penalty kill is an ever-fluctuating thing. The Stars themselves failed to score on all five power plays, and certainly didn’t notch any shorties.

This lapse, if you can even call it that, of the Stars’ special teams could be attributed to several things. Most intuitive, in my opinion, would seem to be the absence of John Klingberg, but hey, you can never be too sure of those things.

You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit

If there’s anything we should be used to by now as Stars fans, it’s the fact that the Dallas Stars can play a great game and put forth a quality effort and still not gain a single point from it. Last night’s game was understandable, as the Stars didn’t mount a comeback until late in the third.

Tonight was a bit different, as the Stars came out with what seemed like blazing guns with an early first goal. But sometimes, things just don’t roll your way- the puck, especially. And that’s something that we Stars fans are just used to.

The Stars will continue their road trip Thursday when they travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins. Hopefully, they’ll have better puck luck there!
