Colorado Avalanche : What Preseason Has Taught Us So Far

Colorado Avalanche fans can expect a new team on the ice once the regular season begins. Find out what we know from the preseason already.

Training camp has finished. The Colorado Avalanche participated in three preseason games already, going 3-0. What have we learned from preseason so far?

Colorado is implementing a new defensive approach created by coach Jared Bedner. New strategies and blue-line set ups were put into place . Veterans will be tasked with learning the new system. Also they will need to get to know new teammates and head coach.

Speaking of defense, newly acquired blue-liners Patrick Wiercloch and Fedor Tyutin have been impressive. They have shown why they were acquired and what they can bring to this team. Eric Gelinas is showing he can be valuable with a strong camp.

Veteran players will be joining the team. Captain Gabriel Landeskog and center Carl Soderberg practiced on Thursday. Goalie Semyon Varlamov, center  Nathan MacKinnon and defenseman Erik Johnson played Friday at Pepsi Center. We have learned that the players are ready to heat it up.

Six players were cut as a result. Bedner is already starting to get players on board with his style of play. Players are excited about what is going on with this team. The game plan so far has been about speed, strong offense and a new style of defense.

We have learned that speed is the name of the game. Bedner and the Avalanche are implementing speed as a big component of their offense. Nathan Mackinnon is a prime example of what speed on the ice can do. It makes the opponent have to change defensive strategy.

Preseason has been impressive so far. Now that veterans are  reporting to camp and playing games. Its time to get started with preparing for the season. We know there will be growing pains but it will be interesting to see how they come out of it.
