Backes gives back to alma mater's rink renovations

David Backes played three years of NCAA hockey at Minnesota State University-Mankato, but they were three years that left a lasting impact on the Blues' star.

So now that he has a successful NHL career, Backes is giving back to his alma mater to the tune of an $100,000 donation to renovations of the Mankato hockey team's facilities. His money will be specifically used for the strength and conditioning room, and the school will name the room after Backes. 

"Mankato has a special place in our hearts," Backes said to the Mankato Free Press. "To have the facility named after us is something pretty special."

Backes played for the Mavericks from 2003-2006 and posted 119 points in 115 games. He served as the team's captain as a junior, and despite leaving school early for the NHL, Backes finished his degree in Organizational Studies in 2014.
