Why it's OK for Roger Goodell to laugh at Roger Staubach's concussion joke

Roger Goodell just can't win.

The reaction was predictable: Outrage all around! How could the NFL commissioner laugh at such a thing?! How could he approve that joke?!! And he laughed! Shameful!

Hold everything. Colin Cowherd addressed the issue on "The Herd" on Friday and said Goodell was in a position where he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

If Goodell didn't approve that joke, he'd be accused of skirting the concussion issue and trying to cover things up. And if he didn't laugh at Staubach's quip, he'd be raked over the coals, a la George W. Bush when he was roasted by Stephen Colbert at the White House correspondents' dinner.

Here is the Colbert-Dubya scene, if you need a refresher.
