What should the Cowboys do with Jameill Showers?

After the recent injury of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo in the third preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, questions surrounding the future roster spot of Jameill Showers have began circulating.

Well here we are-Dallas Cowboys fans are again having to endure the realization of attempting to win games without Tony Romo, the same quarterback who owns nearly every passing record in Cowboys history. This is a trying time to be a Cowboys fan, even with the great preseason rookie quarterback Dak Prescott has managed to put together.

However, second-year quarterback Jameill Showers has been impressive as well. While the third and forth string offensive units have done little to help him from a wide receiver and offensive line standpoint, he has continued to show progress as an athletic quarterback with a huge arm.

So what are the Cowboys going to do with him?

Showers Dilemma

Despite some talk of placing Romo on the designated to return IR list, it is high unlikely the Cowboys will do that unless his condition deteriorates heavily before the end of this weekend. It’s possible the Cowboys were planning to keep three quarterbacks on the roster this entire offseason as well.

Kellen Moore was slated to be the backup quarterback behind Romo before breaking his leg and the front office wasn’t going to cut the rookie Prescott after spending a forth round draft pick on him. The issue now is if they are comfortable with Showers being the primary backup behind Prescott while Romo heals (for however long that will take).

Showers will more than likely play every offensive snap against the Houston Texans later tonight, in what could be his opportunity to show Jason Garrett and the rest of the offensive coaching staff that he can be trusted in a backup role. After the failure of quarterbacks Brandon Weeden and Matt Cassel last season, the thought of bringing in a veteran could be less attractive.

Is Showers inexperienced? Yes. Despite that inexperience he has shown flashes warranting keeping him around and allowing him to develop. It’s highly likely another team would quickly claim Showers if were to not make the final fifty-three. His development along with that of Prescott’s would give the Cowboys stability at the quarterback position.

While there are areas on the Cowboys roster where depth is needed, Showers has one of the highest upsides on the team if he is given the time to develop and work on the nuances of the quarterback position. No better example of how allowing him to develop could benefit the Cowboys is then Tony Romo himself.

History may not repeat itself again, nevertheless Showers could still turn himself into a quality NFL quarterback.
