Washington Redskins: Kirk Cousins Says Team Is 'Boring'
After an exciting and media-filled 2015, Kirk Cousins claims the Washington Redskins’ success is directly related to how boring they are.
Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins took the ailing NFC East by storm last season with a 9-7 season record. 9-7 might seem mediocre, but the fashion in which the NFC East stole the division straight out from underneath its rivals cleats was truly something to behold. After a difficult start to the season, Cousins famous “You like that!?” quote drew attention from around the league. The drama surrounding RGIII and the two-quarterback drama also invaded the locker room at FedEx Field from early in the season. On top of all that, all four teams remained in contention for the NFC East playoff spot up until the last few weeks of the season.
This offseason, there’s been very little drama and media attention in Washington. The only true drama has been the acquisition of cornerback Josh Norman. Norman has a well-known beef with New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Now that Norman is in the NFC East, fans will be treated to the two staring each other down twice a season. It’s not fully football season ’til a full blown down-n-dirty fist fight breaks out in the NFC East.
Cousins has welcomed the relief from the excitement of 2015. RGIII is with the Browns and he no longer needs to command the media to “like that.”
Here’s what Cousins had to say on the matter, via The Washington Times:
“I’ve told my teammates that I’d like to be the San Antonio Spurs of the NFL, be super boring and maybe people at the end of the season just go, ‘Wow, they really had a good year and no one really talked about it,’” Cousins said during training camp. “I don’t need to promote myself. I don’t need to promote what we’re doing. We have plenty of people here who are very good at doing that if we play well enough. I just want to play football. I don’t want to worry about anything else, and I found from playing at Michigan State and playing even before that, if you win football games, everything else takes care of itself. It’s pretty simple. It’s a pretty simple recipe.”
Cousins is wise to want a quiet regular season in which the Skins slowly succeed under the radar. The NFC East is always a drama-filled division, and it’s a challenge to stay out of the spotlight. The Redskins have had a good week leading up to their home opener Saturday. On Thursday, every player on the roster was active during individual drills and
The Redskins have had a good week leading up to their home opener Saturday. On Thursday, every player on the roster was active during individual drills and one-on-one’s at practice. The biggest threat the Redskins will face this season is their schedule. Given their success last season, it’s a given they will be facing some challenging teams. With the Skins improved secondary, a rookie weapon in former TCU Horned Frog wide receiver Josh Doctson, tight end Jordan Reed coming off of a break-out year, and Cousins truly taking ownership of his team, the Redskins have the potential to once again compete for the NFC East title. You like that?! We do.
