Wade Phillips won't beg the Broncos to draft for his defense

Grabbing blockers for Peyton Manning is probably the top priority for John Elway and Co.

Wade Phillips wants his side of the ball to get a little love in the later rounds of the NFL Draft. But the Broncos' defensive coordinator says he doesn't plan on making any impassioned pleas about prospects to his new bosses.

"No, I've been a head coach before," Phillips after Wednesday's minicamp practice. "It's whatever is best for the football team.

"I'm not selfish that way because I have been on the other side where you say, 'Hey, we've got to get the best players for our team.' I know that's what they will do here."

Phillips must have his eyes on a few college stars. The Broncos could use help at safety, inside linebacker, and defensive line.

Still, he knows exactly where his defense sits on the Broncos' pecking order for the draft -- and that's right behind Peyton Manning.
