Vernon Davis blames 'game planning' for lackluster 2014 season

Vernon Davis is coming off the worst year of his career for the San Francisco 49ers. Many attributed his poor 2014 to a back injury that occurred in September, while others said it was because he held out for a new contract for most of the last offseason.

However, Davis has a simple reason for his poor performance: Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman was not calling good enough plays for him to get open.

"Whenever I'd run, like, my deep over routes there was a safety sitting over there already," Davis said, per the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows. "It was just game planning. And nothing really ever opened up. But I wasn't really ever a factor in the offense last year. ... The first game, yeah. But the second game, the tight ends (weren't) really involved as a whole."

Davis has looked great so far at OTAs and minicamp. Head coach Jim Tomsula believes he will be a key player in the 49ers offense this season.

"Vernon is stretching the field," Tomsula said. "Vernon looks extremely fast. Catching the ball really well."
