Titans' offensive line taking shape
While not official yet, it seems the Tennessee Titans may have settled on a starting offensive line to protect rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota.
For the second week in a row, the Titans started Taylor Lewan at left tackle, Byron Bell at left guard, Brian Schwenke at center, Chance Warmack at right guard and rookie Jeremiah Poutasi at right tackle. And for the second week, the group produced positive results.
In Friday's preseason loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the group helped the Titans run for 61 yards on 14 carries in the first half, while yielding one sack.
“It’s fair to say they’ve made a case for themselves,” head coach Ken Whisenhunt said, per the Tennessean. “I still think we’ve got time to work through some things, but they’ve done some good things and made a case to be the five guys.”
The new-look lineup, with Bell sliding over in place of veteran Andy Levitre at left guard and Poutasi, a rookie from Utah, manning the right tackle spot, made its debut in Tennessee's preseason game against the St. Louis Rams on Aug. 23.
“They continued to progress,” Whisenhunt said. “They did some good things, did a good job at protection. We got some different fronts when you play against Kansas City — you get the solid fronts, you get a lot of the pressures — and as far as communication and being able to do a good job with those, for the most part there were some good things.”
