Thursday Sports In Brief

MILWAUKEE (AP) The Detroit Pistons have acquired veteran Ersan Ilyasova from the Milwaukee Bucks, adding a long-range shooter to their frontcourt.

Detroit sent forwards Caron Butler and Shawne Williams to Milwaukee in the trade announced Thursday.

Butler returns to the Bucks after signing as a free agent with Milwaukee in 2013, though Butler and Williams might be most valuable to Milwaukee for their expiring contracts.

Ilyasova is under contract through the 2016-17 season. He was the longest-tenured player on the Bucks with seven seasons in Milwaukee.

Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy said the 6-foot-10 Ilyasova is a player that Detroit has coveted. He averaged 10.7 points and 6 rebounds in 453 games, all with the Bucks. He is a career 37 percent shooter from 3-point range.

NFL

SAN DIEGO (AP) - No one will wear No. 21 for the San Diego Chargers again.

The team will officially retire star running back LaDainian Tomlinson's jersey during a Nov. 22 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The team made the announcement on Thursday with a smiling Tomlinson looking on.

Tomlinson, a five-time Pro Bowler who retired following the 2011 season after also spending time with the New York Jets, is the fourth Charger to have his number retired. He joins Hall of Famers Lance Alworth (No. 19) and Dan Fouts (No. 14) and Junior Seau (No. 55), who goes into the Hall of Fame this summer.

Tomlinson set or tied 28 club records.

NCAA TRACK

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Akela Jones of Kansas State won the collegiate title in just the second heptathlon of her career and DeAnna Price of Southern Illinois set a meet record in winning the hammer Thursday as the women took over competition at the revamped NCAA track and field championships.

Jones, from Barbados, held a big lead after the first day and stayed there throughout Thursday's final three events in the seven-event competition, finishing with 6,371 points. Defending champion Kendell Williams of Georgia was second at 6,223. Williams' teammate Quintunya Chapman was third at 6,147.

The 2-3 finish for Georgia boosts the Bulldogs' chances for the team title.

Price, who entered the meet with the fourth-best mark of the season, already had clinched the competition when she uncorked her big throw of 234-6.

BASEBALL

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Albert Pujols hit his 537th homer to move past Mickey Mantle into sole possession of 16th place on the career list.

The Los Angeles Angels slugger connected in the ninth inning of Thursday night's game at Tampa Bay to break a tie with the New York Yankees great.

Pujols hit a two-run shot to left on an 0-1 pitch from Preston Guilmet. He has gone deep nine times in his last 13 games.

Mike Schmidt is in 15th place with 548 homers.

CHICAGO (AP) - Reds shortstop Zack Cozart has torn a torn tendon and ligaments in his right knee and will need reconstructive surgery, leaving him with a nine-month rehabilitation.

Cozart hurt the knee when he slipped on first base while trying to beat out a grounder during a 5-2 win over Philadelphia on Wednesday. The team hadn't received results of tests on the knee when it headed to Chicago for the start of a four-game series.

It's a stinging setback for the Reds. Cozart is among the NL's top shortstops in numerous offensive categories, with nine homers and 28 RBIs.

He also was the Reds' second-leading candidate for the All-Star Game that will be played in Cincinnati. Only third baseman Todd Frazier has gotten more fan votes.
