Texans QB Ryan Mallett misses practice with 'personal issue'

Houston Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett, who lost the team's starting quarterback job to Brian Hoyer earlier in the week, was absent from practice Thursday for what head coach Bill O'Brien described as a "personal issue."

O'Brien declined to go into detail about Mallett's absence.

“That’s between Ryan and I,” O’Brien said, per John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

It's unclear whether Mallett's absence was related to the team's decision to start Hoyer, although Mallett previously told reporters he was "angry" about the decision. Mallett did attend practice on Wednesday.

O'Brien indiciated he expected the quarterback back at practice on Friday in preparation for Sunday's preseason game against the New Orleans Saints.

“I would think so,” O'Brien said.
