Super Bowl moment No. 41: Green Bay's defense waves the white flag
As we count down to Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, it's time to look back on the magical and memorable moments in the 49 previous Super Bowls. FOX Sports senior NFL writer Alex Marvez has ranked the 50 greatest moments in the big game's big history, and every weekday from now until Feb. 7 we'll unveil the latest addition to our countdown. Today, we look back at moment No. 41, when the Packers' unconventional decision may have cost them Super Bowl XXXII.
Mike Holmgren won a Super Bowl and reached two others.
One has to wonder if his record would be 2-1 if made a different coaching choice at the end of his second Super Bowl.
Holmgren told Green Bay's defense to let Denver running back Terrell Davis score with 1:45 remaining, a decision that allowed the Broncos to take a one-touchdown lead. Figuring that a Denver score was inevitable, Holmgren made the move to give his offense time to try and tie the score.
"I felt it was our only chance to win the game," Holmgren told the media afterwards. That didn't happen.
Denver's defense held when linebacker John Mobley broke up a fourth-down Brett Favre pass to tight end Mark Chmura with less than 30 seconds remaining.
Here are highlights from Super Bowl XXXII.
Final score: Denver 31, Green Bay 24
Terrell Davis won MVP honors.
