Super Bowl moment No. 40: Tatum crushes White
As we count down to Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, it's time to look back on the magical and memorable moments in the 49 previous Super Bowls. FOX Sports senior NFL writer Alex Marvez has ranked the 50 greatest moments in the big game's big history, and every weekday through Feb. 7 we'll unveil the latest addition to our countdown. Today, we look back at moment No. 40, when Jack Tatum put a hit on Sammy White in Super Bowl XI that wouldn't be legal today.
On the bright side, White held onto the football. But that fact isn't nearly as well remembered as the hit that leveled the Minnesota Vikings rookie wide receiver and sent his helmet flying.
Oakland safety Tatum furthered his reputation as one of the NFL's biggest and — some would argue — dirtiest tacklers by crushing White as he caught a pass across the middle of the field in the fourth quarter.
White did return to the game but the Vikings were already well on their way to getting KO'd.
Here is a highlight of the hit from Super Bowl XI.
Final score: Oakland 32, Minnesota 14
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton didn't get much help in this one and is sacked here by Otis Sistrunk of the Oakland Raiders.
