Super Bowl moment No. 29: Unitas beats Cowboys, avenges Super Bowl stunner
As we count down to Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, it's time to look back on the magical and memorable moments in the 49 previous Super Bowls. FOX Sports senior NFL writer Alex Marvez has ranked the 50 greatest moments in the big game's big history, and every weekday from now until Feb. 7 we'll unveil the latest addition to our countdown. Today, we look back at moment No. 29, when Johnny Unitas atoned for losing Super Bowl III with a win in Super Bowl V.
One of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history took advantage of his chance to avenge a stunning Super Bowl III loss to the New York Jets when Johnny Unitas led the Baltimore Colts to a win over Dallas.
One of the pivotal plays in that victory happened by accident. Unitas misfired on a pass that bounced off the hands of wide receiver Eddie Hinton.
The football was tipped again by Cowboys defensive back Mel Renfro before being secured by Colts tight end John Mackey, who turned the deflection into a Super Bowl-record 75-yard touchdown catch.
Mackey and Unitas are both in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
