Super Bowl moment No. 16: Marcus Allen runs with the night
As we count down to Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, Calif., it's time to look back on the magical and memorable moments in the 49 previous Super Bowls. FOX Sports senior NFL writer Alex Marvez has ranked the 50 greatest moments in the big game's big history, and every weekday from now until Feb. 7 we'll unveil the latest addition to our countdown. Today, we look back at moment No. 16, when Marcus Allen unleashed one of the greatest runs in Super Bowl history on Jan. 22, 1984.
The longest touchdown run in Super Bowl history looked like it would be anything but when Los Angeles Raiders running back Marcus Allen took a third-quarter handoff from quarterback Jim Plunkett.
But after spinning away from Washington safety Ken Coffey, Allen swung around to his right and turned up-field. He was in the end zone 74 yards later.
Legendary NFL Films announcer John Facenda immortalized the play with his call, "As Washington's hopes faded into the dying daylight, on came Marcus Allen, running with the night." Allen finished with a Super Bowl-record 191 rushing yards along with two touchdowns.
