Source: RG3 expected to start Week 1

A source told FOX Sports Insider Mike Garafolo that Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is expected to start the regular-season opener but hasn't yet been cleared by Dr. James Andrews. Griffin will be examined by Andrews Thursday.

Citing sources close to the quarterback, ESPN.com reported that the "meeting is just a formality." The report adds that Andrews cleared the quarterback before training camp and is simply re-examining the knee.

Griffin has been practicing with the team.

The AP reported on Thursday that the final decision on whether Griffin plays in the Sept. 9 opener will be made by coach Mike Shanahan, whom the report points out "could see something in practice that might give him pause."
