Should Bills sit LeSean McCoy to rest hamstring injury?

By Jesse Reed

LeSean McCoy still isn’t close to being fully healthy with a sore hamstring, and the Buffalo Bills would be smart to sit him for a week to let him get right.

Since joining the Bills via trade, McCoy hasn’t been able to showcase his signature explosive style of running. His hamstring has been an issue since mid August, and as such his play has suffered, averaging just 3.4 yards per carry and totaling just 146 total rushing yards in three games.

His frustration with the situation is evident.

“I can’t get that acceleration,” he said, via Tyler Dunne of The Buffalo News “that burst.”

Head coach Rex Ryan declined to say whether or not the team would consider putting McCoy on the shelf for a week to let his hamstring get right, per Dunne, but he did express his frustration about the situation.

“I feel frustrated for him because I know the kind of mark he wants to put on this team,” Ryan said. “But physically, right now, he’s not quite back to where we need him to be. But I love the kid, love his attitude, he’s impressive.”

Meanwhile, rookie Karlos Williams out of Florida State has been filling in nicely, averaging 7.8 yards per attempt and scoring three times on the ground.

At this point, the only logical move for the Bills is to sit McCoy out of practice for an entire week, along with a game, and then re-evaluate his status heading into Week 5. With Williams performing so well, there’s no reason to continue dragging this out week after week.

And, just maybe, in the meantime Williams will prove to be the more valuable back. Stranger things have happened, and despite McCoy’s hefty price tag the Bills must feature the players that give them the best chance to win.
