Saints release standout TE Shockey

The New Orleans Saints released four-time Pro Bowl tight end Jeremy Shockey on Tuesday.

FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer first reported that the Saints were parting ways with the 30-year-old.

“Jeremy played an important role in helping our team bring a Super Bowl championship to New Orleans,” coach Sean Payton in a statement. “He contributed to the success of our offense, both as a pass-catcher and run blocker, and we’re appreciative of his efforts.”

The Saints got Shockey in a trade with the New York Giants after the 2007 season. In his three seasons with New Orleans, he caught 139 passes for 1,460 yards with six touchdowns.

This past season he had 41 receptions for 408 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games.
