Report: Three teams courting WR Mason
The New York Jets still are waiting on word from veteran wide receiver Derrick Mason, who is also reportedly weighing offers from both of his former teams, the Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans, the New York Post reported Saturday.
Jets coach Rex Ryan said that Mason was likely to get more money playing elsewhere than the terms offered to him Thursday by Gang Green bosses.
"I obviously would like to get Derrick right now, but he's got other teams, he's got other things like that, and I'm sure he'd have to leave money on the table to come here," Ryan said.
The Jets released longtime receiver Jerricho Cotchery on Thursday. It was believed that they released him because they signed Mason, but Ryan said that was not the case. Cotchery asked to be traded or released.
Ryan was asked if it would have been wiser to wait until they had Cotchery's replacement in the fold before getting rid of him.
"I'm a man of my word, and if I say something, then I'll do it," Ryan said. "If I tell you that we would give you permission to seek a trade or release you if we had picked up somebody, then that's what we're going to do. We'll be OK one way or another, but if I give you my word, then that's what it is. You have my word. That's why I tried to explain about the Derrick Mason thing. It wasn't like we were signing Derrick and letting Jerricho go. That was not it."
The Tennessean reported that the Titans expressed interest in signing Cotchery.
