Report: Rex Ryan wants to start Taylor, other coaches like Cassel
The endless back-and-forth of "who will start for the Buffalo Bills" continues, even after both Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel impressed on Thursday night.
Taylor and Manuel were the only quarterbacks to see time during the team's second preseason game, with Matt Cassel sitting out. That could be due to head coach Rex Ryan's desire to name Taylor the starter.
According to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report, Ryan is tempted to start Taylor, but he may not have the backing of the rest of the coaching staff. NFL Network and multiple sources who Cole has talked to believe the rest of the coaches are afraid of Taylor making mistakes and would prefer to start Cassel.
Being the head coach, Ryan likely has the final say in who starts, but going against the rest of the coaching staff probably wouldn't be the best decision. Even then, Ryan has reassured everyone that he won't name a starter until Week 1, making it tougher for the Indianapolis Colts to plan for their matchup against Buffalo.
What intrigues Ryan about Taylor is his big-play ability. He's shown that in both preseason games, making several big plays with his legs as well as his arm. Ryan seems willing to take a chance on Taylor, but his coaching staff may not be on the same page.
