Report: Former Texans QB Ryan Mallett files for termination pay

Former Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett, who was released in October after missing a team flight to Miami, has filed for termination pay according a report.

Per ESPN's Tania Ganguli, Mallett will receive $1.47 million from the Texans. The sum constitutes the remainder of the quarterback's salary for the rest of the year.

As Ganguli notes, a player can file for termination pay just once in his career and it's often done when the expectation is any future contract won't be as large.

Mallett signed a two-year, $7 million deal with the Texans in March. He started four games before being cut Oct. 27.

The five-year veteran said he missed the flight prior to Houston's 44-26 loss to the Dolphins due to traffic, forcing him to fly commercial to the game.

Mallett also missed a practice in the preseason after losing the quarterback competition to Brian Hoyer, telling the team he overslept.
