Report: Cowboys won't trade draft picks for Adrian Peterson

By Rachel Wold

During an interview with 105.3 The Fan, Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones shut down the idea that the team would use draft picks to acquire a veteran player—for example, a veteran like Adrian Peterson.

"I don't see us using any picks to trade for veteran players," Jones said when asked about the possibility.

Peterson, a 30-year-old running back who is unsettled in his present situation with the Minnesota Vikings and has been connected to Dallas, certainly fits the description of a “veteran player.”

Under Jerry Jones, the Cowboys have generally built their roster through the NFL Draft. Currently, they possess the No. 27 overall pick in the first round and the 60th pick in Round 2. If the Cowboys follow through and do not send picks to acquire Peterson, then we’ll likely see them spend one of the selections on a running back.

Todd Gurley, Melvin Gordon, Duke Johnson, Ameer Adbullah and Jay Ajayi are among the top names to watch for Dallas on draft day.

Obviously, the Cowboys must address the position after star back DeMarco Murray took a job with the Philadelphia Eagles. At this point, Dallas has most of its eggs laying in Darren McFadden’s basket, which is kind of a scary thought.

Again, if the Cowboys stick true to Jones’ statement, it would appear that Peterson will not be landing there this season. That is, unless the Cowboys have something else tricky up their sleeve.
