Report: 49ers to choose between Shanahan, Kelly
By Steve DelVecchio
The San Francisco 49ers will be making a very big splash when they decide who their next coach will be, according to a report.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter has learned that the Niners are in the process of choosing between Chip Kelly and Mike Shanahan. A decision is expected by Friday.
At one point, it appeared that the 49ers were close to signing former Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, but Jackson wound up going to the Cleveland Browns. San Francisco has been rumored to have mutual interest with both Shanahan and Kelly since the start of the offseason.
Shanahan won a Super Bowl with the 49ers as an offensive coordinator in the 90s, so he has plenty of history with the team. Both Kelly and Shanahan have also had success with mobile quarterbacks, which makes you wonder if Colin Kaepernick is going to keep his job.
With coaching vacancies filling rapidly, this could be the last chance Shanahan and Kelly have of landing a job. If what we recently heard about the latter is true, Shanahan is probably the frontrunner.
