Report: 49ers Ownership to Pull Power from CEO Jed York

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora made some notable reports on the San Francisco 49ers over the weekend, and his latest has the team’s ownership pulling powers from CEO Jed York.

The San Francisco 49ers sure aren’t without their need for front-office shakeups this offseason. And those might be coming true, if CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora is correct.

Over the weekend, La Canfora reported current general manager Trent Baalke is likely out after the 2016 season. La Canfora also noted the fate of head coach Chip Kelly would likely be determined by whoever takes over in Baalke’s stead.

But the latest news speculates the much-needed changes won’t stop there.

La Canfora appeared on KNBR 680 on Monday morning, where he pointed out the next person who could be on the chopping block would be CEO Jed York.

KNBR’s Kevin Jones broke down what La Canfora had to say.

“Jed would be out. He wouldn’t be involved in football operations,” La Canfora said. “I mean you can get cute with titles. You can do whatever you think you have to do. But the premise would be, the top of the pyramid would be this person they bring in, to effectively be running the football operation. …

“They would extensively hire someone to actually run the football operations on a day-to-day basis. There would be someone there, whether it’s Mike Shanahan or whomever — who may then themselves decide I should be the coach and executive vice president of football operations. But at the very least, there would be someone there, a football man, atop the entire personnel pyramid, who would essentially be a team president / head of football ops, making the day-to-day decisions on the way things operate.”

More from Niner Noise

York has never recovered from the controversy that plagued the organization leading up to, and after, the mutual parting of ways with former head coach Jim Harbaugh.

And while parting ways with Baalke, and possibly Kelly as well, is the right thing to do, signs are pointing to the franchise truly wanting to start over from scratch.

We’ll see if anything like this pans out. But at least there seems to be somewhat of an equal sentiment from Dr. John and Denise York in comparison to how fans are viewing Jed York’s actions.
