Redskins rookie RB Matt Jones solid in his preseason debut
As expected, rookie running back Matt Jones entered the Washington Redskins' preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns as the team's third running back. Earlier this week, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden revealed that Chris Thompson was ahead of Jones on the depth chart and currently the Redskins' third-down back.
Gruden might have to change his mind if Jones continues to play like he did on Thursday night. Jones finished with five carries for 38 yards. On his first carry of the game, he showed off his burst by exploding forward for 23 yards.
Jones did not receive a single snap with the first team offense, but he was solid in pass protection and added an 11-yard reception in the passing game. If he can continue to improve as a pass blocker and receiver, he could make a move up the depth chart and give Thompson a run for the third-down back role.
After the Redskins selected him in the third-round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan compared Jones to Marshawn Lynch. The Redskins clearly have high hopes for Jones.
