RB Pead goes unclaimed on waivers following release from Rams
Running back Isaiah Pead became a free agent after he was unclaimed on waivers one day after his release by the St. Louis Rams.
Pead, a second-round draft pick in 2012 who was expected to be the eventual successor to longtime backfield stalwart Steven Jackson, was cut loose to free up a roster spot for cornerback Brandon McGee, who was promoted from the practice squad.
Rams coach Jeff Fisher said Pead was the victim of a numbers game in a crowded backfield after this year's first-round pick, Todd Gurley, made his season debut last weekend.
Fisher praised Pead's work ethic for battling back from a torn ACL that cost him the entire 2014 season and left the door open for Pead to return if the team needed him down the road.
McGee, who has yet to play this season after aggravating a foot injury that limited him to two games in 2014, will play primarily on special teams.
